Six Months in France

November 7, 2025November 7, 2025

Six months ago yesterday, we landed in France, full of hope and excitement for the adventure ahead. While the road has been bumpy at times, France has largely delivered a satisfying experience for us and we’re happy to have enjoyed it so far. We’ve made a few purchases lately to enhance our French living experience.

France changed from daylight savings time this past weekend and for the first time, our evening activities this week have happened in the twilight/dark. Greg snapped this lovely photo of the Cathédrale Saint-Maurice d’Angers on Sunday looking beautiful while the bells tolled on our way to dinner at a friend’s house. This was definitely an

Finding the Rhythm of French Life

I find myself posting less these days, not because there aren’t good and interesting things happening — there are, in fact we are working on a couple of new things that we’ll share soon. I think this is happening because living in France has become less like a “what adventure are we going to have

Learning to Speak French (is Hard)

October 16, 2025October 18, 2025

As mentioned recently in another post about our fall activities, we’re making a committed effort to increase our ability to speak and understand French. We’ve been taking French lessons twice weekly for the last three weeks. I can’t lie — it’s hard! Our teacher is tough and very focused on giving us a solid foundation

A Perfect Day in France

October 5, 2025October 16, 2025

Yesterday was a day that epitomized what we hoped France would be like. We got up to a cool fall morning with some rain that ended by 10am, so the day was fresh. We hopped on the quiet and half empty tram (a novelty in a city with 45,000 university students) to go downtown to

Our Neighborhood Château

We took a walk on a beautiful fall day recently and stumbled across, as apparently one does when living in a French neighborhood, this lovely chateau, less than three miles from our house. Château de la Perrière was completed in 1699 and now serves as a golf clubhouse to the attached 18-hole golf course and

Who Wants a $55+tip breakfast?!?!

September 15, 2025September 21, 2025

Every once in a while, we like to go out for a good breakfast. There’s a place called Omelette Express in Santa Rosa (California) that is a community staple for a good breakfast, brunch, and lunch and we’ve been eating there for years. Santa Rosa is where the Peanuts cartoonist, Charles Schulz, is from and

Being a Tourist in America

We’re back in the U.S. for a couple of weeks to see family, eat some spicy food and the best deep dish pizza this side of Chicago, and grab a few things from our storage place to bring back to France to make our place feel more like home. We brought two large, empty suitcases

Riding Two by Two

For Greg, each summer is an opportunity to maximize his cycling adventures and see more of the world than can be viewed from the window of a moving vehicle. This cycling summer culminated with a new adventure: a tandem bike ride! Not only that, but a 100km (62 miles) tandem bike ride, plus the to/from
