Heavenly Dessert

Posted by Michelle

We’ve been to the same bakery (“Maison Ayrole Maureille”) a few blocks away from our apartment for four days in a row now, trying various pastries, a baguette, small pizzettes with ham and cheese, and a sandwich with ham, tiny pickles, and butter. I’m starting to get embarrassed!

But what has me literally dreaming about this bakery is this incredible item: a “Flan Crémieux de Vanille,” a super rich and creamy French custard with vanilla. When I first saw it, I wasn’t sure I was interested. I don’t love Mexican flan or panna cotta so the name was throwing me off, but this is nothing like those (very worthy) desserts. It’s heavier than creme brulee, which I do like quite a bit. There is a thin layer of phyllo dough on the bottom and sides of it that hold all the goodness in. The top looks burnt, but isn’t. This piece is actually a half slice on a dinner plate, and the piece is about 5″ long. Thanks for letting me share it with you!
