Saturday is Market Day

Posted by Michelle

It’s Saturday morning which is the day that many French people head out to the local street markets with their baskets and wheeled carts to buy their food for the week. This is a picture of the offerings at just one stand, out of probably 30 that are just for fruits and vegetables. Every one of them had gorgeous, freshly picked strawberries! There were also about 6-7 cheese vendors (vendeurs de fromage), 7-8 meat vendors (vendeurs de viande), and 3-4 fresh fish vendors (vendeurs de poisson).

And then there were the 10+ bread and pastries vendors (boulangeries and patisseries)! We bought two twice-baked almond croissants for €1.80 each. They were so good we forgot to take a picture! We also bought two stuffed baguettes (one ham and cheese, and the other a couple cheeses including feta) to have later for dinner, each about a foot long, each was €3.60. Tax is already included in everything so all in, it was less than €11 (~$12.25).

We’re not quite settled enough here to cook and the apartment we are in is extra small. The kitchen / dining room / living room combo is about 14 x 14 feet square – that might be generous. We are actually moving apartments on Monday to one that is bigger that does not have a terrifying death-trap staircase and is closer to the areas of town that are most interesting to us, including the market. Some things you just can’t tell from a photo!

We can’t wait to go back to this market next week and buy more food to prepare for the week ahead. The quality of food here is incredible and delicious, and so far the weather here has been lovely.

“À bientôt, mes amis!” (see you later, my friends!)
